MYSTIFY
MICHAEL HUTCHENCE
Directed and Written by Richard Lowenstein

Synopsis

Michael Hutchence was a world famous performer and singer in the ‘80s and ‘90s who had a magnetism and charisma that both beguiled and dazzled. The band he led, INXS, was one of the very few Australian stadium bands to enjoy international stardom. But at the height of his powers, Michael’s life faltered and he died prematurely at the age of 37.

MYSTIFY Michael Hutchence is a feature-length theatrical documentary written and directed by Richard Lowenstein, the director responsible for the majority of both INXS and Michael Hutchence’s solo videos and the 1986 feature film Dogs in Space in which Michael played the lead role. Richard and Michael went on to become close friends.

Incorporating history-making performances in cutting-edge Dolby Atmos technology, never-before-seen personal footage, high-resolution music-video outtakes and commercial archive, along with intimate interviews with friends, lovers, family, colleagues and Michael Hutchence himself, MYSTIFY Michael Hutchence portrays a young man’s life journey from the beginnings of his fractured family background, up to the peaks of rock stardom and becoming an object of desire, down to the depths of the desperately depressed person he became after a violent accident that occurred one night in Copenhagen.

The accident resulted in the severing of his olfactory neurons and complete loss of his senses of smell and taste, which in combination with the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) that was sustained, had a profound psychological effect on his mental health. His life was never to be the same again.

Mystify will see its official release at the Tribeca Film Festival
